Other than that, nothing really stands out. Solid overall. GRADE: Good ============================================================================================================================= -------------------------------------------------- Blue Leaf - Underwater Cavern (Donut Secret 1) -------------------------------------------------- Playing the level backwards was interesting, and I think the layer 2 water was utilised relatively well. However, I think some of the Boo placements are a bit unfair, especially in certain situations when combined with the smashing water. The idea of using Porcu-Puffers in a vertical segment for the secret exit was good in concept, but I wish it were expanded on a bit instead of just dodging them over and over again, which became repetitive rather quickly. GRADE: Mediocre ============================================================================================================================= -------------------------------------------------- chineesmw - HAUNTED CASTLE (Wendy's Castle) -------------------------------------------------- The general aesthetic is nice, though I wish the red was a little less bright or less saturated. For the most part, the enemy placement makes sense, though there are a couple of parts that are a bit too tight for fire breath to be a reasonable obstacle. The biggest concern I have with this level is the fact that there are no powerups at all (aside from the midpoint)--even a single mushroom sprite would have been nice. The boss is alright, if cramped. Nonetheless enjoyable even with its flaws. GRADE: Good ============================================================================================================================= -------------------------------------------------- Dr. Tapeworm - Ghostly Gravity (Donut Secret 1) -------------------------------------------------- The aesthetics here are wonderful, and the placement of the layer 2 water was well thought-out. Feels very separate from the original level and is overall very fun to play. GRADE: Excellent ============================================================================================================================= -------------------------------------------------- Erik557 - Lost caves (Chocolate Island 4) -------------------------------------------------- I was close to giving this an "Excellent" rating; the enemy placement is great and the atmosphere is very well-done, however there are a couple of major flaws that unfortunately make me have to drag it down in score. Firstly, occasionally some of your sprites would not show up until within very close distance (there was one muncher in particular that did this every time I played through the level), resulting in some unfair deaths. Secondly, there was one bit where taking the wrong path leads to a dead end that is impossible to see coming from that distance, which caught me on my first run through. THe last major thing that I feel was very unintentional was that your teleport at the end takes me to an endless bonus game, so I can't finish the level. Overall though, I enjoyed this level quite a bit. GRADE: Good ============================================================================================================================= -------------------------------------------------- Error 52 - 24 hour level entry (Donut Secret 1) -------------------------------------------------- words cannot describe the quality of this level because there's no quality to describe GRADE: Terrible ============================================================================================================================= -------------------------------------------------- GameplaysDetonados - #6 Wendy's Ship (Wendy's Castle) -------------------------------------------------- I was thoroughly impressed by the quality of this. The waves were slightly distracting but I LOVE the idea of turning Wendy's Castle into a ghost ship-styled level. Throughout the level the enemy placement was honestly very smart; the enemies are designed around the level almost perfectly, especially in the layer 2 smash segment, as even there the enemies were placed with that layer 2 in mind. The biggest nitpick with the level is that I think having three Podoboo Boos in the boss room, especially at their increased speed, makes the fight pretty cramped, however it really doesn't detract much from the level itself. Excellent work. GRADE: Excellent ============================================================================================================================= -------------------------------------------------- IDidMakeThat - Crimsonwater Cave (Chocolate Island 4) -------------------------------------------------- The structure of the water is interesting, and the subtle details in the graphics were a nice touch; however the main source of challenge, being the Boos, felt very artifical, as if they were placed with no real thought or reason. This created some pretty annoying spots and overall wasn't much fun to play. GRADE: Mediocre ============================================================================================================================= -------------------------------------------------- JaphethMario21st - DEAD SEA (Donut Secret 1) -------------------------------------------------- The graphical changes were nice, but the level felt very cramped, especially with the bullet generator active. While there are some decent setups throughout, often I find myself cornered with no choice but to take damage. Unfortunately one of the side effects of this is that being Big Mario actually puts you at a disadvantage in some cases, which is never a good sign. GRADE: Mediocre ============================================================================================================================= -------------------------------------------------- K3fka + Sixcorby - VALLEY OF BOWSER 2 (Valley of Bowser 2) -------------------------------------------------- I admit I chuckled a bit at the zombie koopas and the skeletons. Pretty standard fare otherwise, though the sections with the Big Boos in the tight tunnels felt a bit cramped and slightly annoying to traverse. The skeletons, on the other hand, were placed very well and complimented the layout of the level. GRADE: Good ============================================================================================================================= -------------------------------------------------- KTBHacking - AVERAGE WATER LEVEL (Chocolate Island 4) -------------------------------------------------- It's a shame that what happened happened, but I do have to judge this based on what was submitted. The glitched sprites unfortunately do detract quite a bit from the feel of the level. The placement of the fish worked well, but on the other hand, I'm disappointed that there appears to be no element of the "haunted" side of the theme implemented; it really does end up feeling like an "AVERAGE WATER LEVEL". GRADE: Mediocre ============================================================================================================================= -------------------------------------------------- Lazy - DONUT SECRET 1 (Donut Secret 1) -------------------------------------------------- I really love this level. The feel is great, even if I think that bright orange may not have been the best color choice for the background (a darker orange would have worked better). Interesting idea to use the Thwomps and Ball n Chains in an underwater setting, and it really worked out well. The only other complaint I really have is that a few of the Boo placements are a bit tight for my liking, but other than that this is very well done. Also THOSE BIG BOOS <3 GRADE: Excellent ============================================================================================================================= -------------------------------------------------- Lespna1 - Haunted Maze (Donut Secret House) -------------------------------------------------- I honestly have nothing good to say about this level. It feels like you took the original and just slapped on a couple of random enemies and a couple Boos which pose basically no threat whatsoever and make for a bland, boring level. The thing that REALLY gets me though is that your P-switch doesn't spawn unless you backtrack, which is ridiculous. I spent way too much time trying to figure out why I couldn't progress in the level. Also, the layer 2 water sections are kinda unnecessary since you can beat the level without ever going near them so I wonder if they were the result of some kind of error, but nonetheless even with the water it only becomes more annoying because the water moves with the background while it scrolls, making the whole thing incredibly awkward. In addition, the water seemed to only be there for the sake of being able to call it a water level, which just comes off as lazy. GRADE: Terrible ============================================================================================================================= -------------------------------------------------- Medic - #6 WENDY's CASTLE (Wendy's Castle) -------------------------------------------------- I didn't want this to end so quickly! The atmosphere is amazing! Unfortunately I can't really rate this highly since there's barely a real element of gameplay, but this could have done VERY well if you had continued it into an actual level! also overused memes wow GRADE: Poor ============================================================================================================================= -------------------------------------------------- MercuryPenny - The Sunken Temple (Valley of Bowser 1) -------------------------------------------------- Hm. The aesthetic is pretty good, but overall the level feels very empty; while that might work well in context, it doesn't really serve for a great contest entry. There were a lot of dead ends that became very annoying because of how slow you move, and with all the possibility of dead ends and "exploration" the time limit should really be at least a hundred seconds longer, as on both of my runs through I ended up being very close to running out of time. GRADE: Mediocre ============================================================================================================================= -------------------------------------------------- Mindevous - ?????? (Donut Secret 1) -------------------------------------------------- Aside from the colors in this new world, it feels pretty similar to the original level, albeit a bit more challenging. Fish setups were fine, however unfortunately the fact that Mario was in this new world really detracted from the gameplay since it is so distracting, and really ruins the experience. Also obligatory jumpscares. GRADE: Mediocre ============================================================================================================================= -------------------------------------------------- Morsel - DONUT PLAINS 2 (Donut Plains 2) -------------------------------------------------- The faster Boo Rings were a very interesting obstacle and were for the most part used well, however there were a few instances where I believe they may have been either too fast or in a bad spot, creating some unfortunately difficult situations. Aside from that, though, very solid and smart use of enemies. GRADE: Good ============================================================================================================================= -------------------------------------------------- msi810 - HOUSE OF ILLUSIONS (Donut Secret House) -------------------------------------------------- The idea of making the entire structure of the level invisible was a HUGE risk, but honestly I think it paid off. Enemy placements were smart, and the disappearing doors were an interesting concept especially i this situation. HOWEVER, I wish you had expanded on it, as the doors were only used for a small section and were gone as fast as they came. Also, due to the nature of the original level, it felt like there was a lot of empty space; and also I think some of the walls/platforms really needed at least a tiny bit of visualisation. Overall, though, I enjoyed it. GRADE: Good ============================================================================================================================= -------------------------------------------------- Nathanrayman98 - DONUT SECRET 1 (Donut Secret 1) -------------------------------------------------- Aesthetically, this is absolutely beautiful in its simplicity. However, aside from adding a few Urchins and maybe moving a couple of fish, the design really does very little to distinguish itself from the original level, and that's really what the contest was about. GRADE: Poor ============================================================================================================================= -------------------------------------------------- Neropla - GHOST CAVE (Donut Plains 2) -------------------------------------------------- Very empty, and the autoscroll just makes it feel even more so. If you're going to keep the autoscroll in, you gotta make sure it stays interesting--unfortunately, that was not accomplished at all here. I found myself having to fastforward through most of the level to keep me even remotely interested. GRADE: Poor ============================================================================================================================= -------------------------------------------------- nick 139 - A Ghostly Night (Donut Secret 1) -------------------------------------------------- This is one of the only levels in this contest that I believe uses the Boos/Eeries really, really well. They are all in locations that pose threats to the player, and the moving water really makes for an interesting type of challenge since you don't actually move faster than the Boos while swimming. I would have liked to see faster moving water, as I think you could have made a really neat theme throughout the level in doing so, but for what it is the level is done very well. The bonus room feels lazy, but since it's a side thing it doesn't really detract anything from the level. GRADE: Good ============================================================================================================================= -------------------------------------------------- Nin - VALLEY OF BOWSER 1 (Valley of Bowser 1) -------------------------------------------------- I'm going to be brutally honest--it felt to me like you just took the original level, gave it a disgusting palette, blindfolded yourself, and spammed Chucks and Mega Moles and Banzai Bills throughout with no thought nor effort whatsoever. Almost the entire level suffers from disappearing sprites, making this almost impossible to play. I'm honestly not sure if this is meant to be a serious entry--I had more fun playing the joke level than this. GRADE: Terrible ============================================================================================================================= -------------------------------------------------- RandomUser46 - HAUNTED WATERS (Donut Secret 1) -------------------------------------------------- There are a few odd decisions in this level, however I love the aesthetic and it's mostly solid otherwise. The biggest issue for me is that the Silver P-switch really takes away from half the challenge of the level, which comes from the Fishin' Boo, which is actually utilised pretty well and is supported well by the structure of the level. The other thing that bothers me is that both at the start and after the bonus room, there are enemies immediately in your face with little reaction time, so on a first run death at the start is a very likely possibility. GRADE: Good ============================================================================================================================= -------------------------------------------------- Rockythetigre - JAWS (Chocolate Island 4) -------------------------------------------------- This has to be my favorite level in terms of aesthetics. The low-quality music, the seemingly simplistic visuals and the overall abstractness combine to make an AMAZING feel. Design-wise, it could use some work; there are quite a few spots at the start where it is pretty empty and boring but the second half is significantly better in that regard. The Porcu-Puffers as obstacles were interesting. GRADE: Good ============================================================================================================================= -------------------------------------------------- Thehoundsquad - SUBMERGED CHOCOCAVE (Chocolate Island 4) -------------------------------------------------- I think the use of the ghosts here was really smart. They were all in locations that felt necessary, and there is evident thought put into their placement. My only major complaint is that the HDMA effect is honestly pretty ugly at such a large scale. Well done, though. GRADE: Excellent ============================================================================================================================= -------------------------------------------------- TheLostKooper - SUNKEN SILENT FORT (Wendy's Castle) -------------------------------------------------- The design here is pretty good. Enemies feel like they're supposed to be there and not just there for the sake of having enemies. However, even though I know it's intentional, I feel like the silence does detract from the experience. Even a quiet ambiance track would have made this so, so much more enjoyable to play. GRADE: Good ============================================================================================================================= -------------------------------------------------- Yan - DEEP DARK DITCH (Donut Plains 2) -------------------------------------------------- It's really unfortunate that the sprite graphics didn't quite turn out, because this level is super well made and really enjoyable to play. Everything fits together and feels on-point. Unlike the other level with glitched graphics, I don't think they really take too much away from this level at all, as somehow they still almost feel like they belong. Excellent level.
